Welcome!
It is an honor that you would spend an hour of your weekend with us at St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Our worship service is at 9:00 am on Sunday. Please feel free to participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable! We hope you will join us for coffee and treats after the service.
Or stream the service at home on our YouTube channel.

Our worship is traditional and contemplative, led by the sounds of pipe organ, keyboard, and choir. We sing from the hymnal. Scripture and prayer are important parts of our worship as well. The Episcopal service invites active participation, but you can observe or join in as much as you feel comfortable.
-
We realize the Episcopal liturgy can be daunting if you’re not used to it! The service booklet is laid out in an easy-to-follow format, including scripture readings, spoken responses, and any sung responses. The hymns are found in the blue hymnal in the pew racks. Hymn numbers are listed in the bulletin or on the board at the front right of the sanctuary.
-
While some parishioners dress in “Sunday best” including dresses and suits, others wear jeans or whatever is most comfortable. You will see a range of clothing choices and you can join us wearing what you like.
-
Ample parking is available in the Sturgis city lot off of Clay Street, just behind the businesses on Chicago Road.
-
From the parking lot, the door on the right by the bell tower leads directly to the sanctuary, but there is a short set of stairs just inside the door. The door to the left, by the office, is handicap-accessible and leads to the sanctuary from the front behind the organ.

Children and parents are always welcome at St. John’s! In the narthex (the entry area at the back of the church), activity bags, quiet toys, and books are available for use during the service. If you need to get up and walk around with a small child, there are speakers in the narthex so you can still hear what is going on in the service.
Childcare is an option on request with providers who have completed safety training as required by our diocese.
-
It is our practice to greet one another during a brief break halfway through the service. We usually shake hands while exchanging words such as “Peace be with you” or just “Peace.”
-
Regular attenders of St. John’s give money during the offering as a way of marking our commitment to the work of our church. If you are a visitor, please do not feel pressured to give. Your presence with us is a gift.
-
Anyone is welcome to participate, including those from other church traditions. Eucharist is offered at the communion rail, and worshippers come forward pew by pew. You may kneel or stand to receive. The wafer is offered first. The wine is offered in two ways: you may consume the wafer and then drink from the Chalice, or you may hold the wafer and receive the wine by intinction (dipping) done by the clergy or server. The cup contains wine, not grape juice, and if you prefer not to take it, you may cross your hands over your chest when it is offered. Receiving in one kind (i.e., bread only) is also full communion. A gluten free wafer is available on request.

All are invited to join us for conversation, coffee, and treats after the service. Coffee hour is hosted in the Great Hall, through the door behind the organ at the front of the church, around the corner, and up the stairs. On the first Sunday of the month we have a potluck brunch and all are welcome to join in.
