“It’s in giving that we receive. Learning to give is what makes us happy and that’s what’s happened here. I think we’ve learned to give.” - Jo Johnson
Free Friday Friendship Lunch
Since 2006, St. John's has offered the Free Friday Friendship Lunch, giving St. John's the nickname "The Church that feeds people." The Friday Lunch offers a free, hot meal to anyone along with access to free showers and community services.
Over the years attendees have included the homeless, the underhoused, individuals looking for community and those seeking help from community service agencies. Through the Friendship Lunch, St. John's has built enduring relationships with others including the County Health Department, Covered Bridge Health, Keystone Place Emergency Shelter, and many others. The Friendship Lunch also serves as a hub for people needing additional food support, gas cards, laundry vouchers, sleeping bags, tents and referrals to other county wide agencies.
Lunch is served from 11:30-12:30 in the Great Hall and is open to anyone who needs a meal or some friendly conversation. Showers are available from 9:00-11:00.
Community Donations and Support
We are grateful for the many ways our community supports the work of the Friday Lunch, including the following:
Partner churches and organizations from Sturgis and surrounding areas who help cook lunches.
The Bombas company donated thousands of pairs of Bombas socks.
Gateway Village donated 40 pounds of green beans, and many bags of apples.
Sturgis annual community drive to collect toiletries and hygiene items.
